Not all specs are created equal in the wholesale market. Some features command a durable premium over years of depreciation. Others look good on paper and disappear in value by year three.

Every used RV is being repriced by the wholesale market in real time. The question for dealers who buy and sell used units regularly is: which features generate a durable price premium that survives depreciation, and which features add sticker price at purchase but contribute nothing to the unit’s wholesale value three years later?

The answer matters at every point in the inventory cycle. It shapes which trade-in allowances are justified. It determines which wholesale units are underpriced relative to their actual market value. And it informs which acquisition targets, all else being equal, should be prioritized.

Features That Create Durable Wholesale Premiums

Solar packages with lithium battery banks. This combination has emerged as one of the most reliably value-retaining factory-installed option clusters in the current wholesale market. The reasons are functional: an RV with a legitimate factory-installed solar array (400 watts or higher) and a lithium battery bank can support extended off-grid use without generator dependence. That capability has real market demand across a growing buyer segment — boondockers, remote workers, national forest and BLM land campers — and it’s expensive to retrofit properly.

Factory-installed solar holds better than aftermarket solar because buyers can evaluate the system quality, the warranties remain in place, and the installation isn’t a liability. A 200-watt aftermarket solar kit installed with exposed wiring adds nothing to wholesale value and may subtract from it. A factory 400-watt + 200Ah lithium configuration on a two-year-old travel trailer commands a documented premium of $2,000 to $4,000 in active wholesale markets, and that premium compresses slowly because the underlying demand for the capability doesn’t.

Factory-installed outdoor kitchens — specifically configurations with a built-in grill station, slide-out prep surface, and exterior refrigerator — retain more wholesale value than most dealers assign them at trade-in. The aftermarket cost to add a comparable outdoor kitchen to a unit that doesn’t have one ranges from $4,000 to $9,000 for quality installation. Wholesale buyers who use that reference for valuation often pass on trade-in opportunities that were priced without accounting for the feature value.

The nuance: an outdoor kitchen that’s been used heavily, with a grill that needs cleaning and a refrigerator with seal issues, doesn’t hold its premium. Condition matters. A clean, well-maintained outdoor kitchen is an asset; a deteriorated one is a liability.

Generator pre-wire and onan generator packages. Interior trim levels, countertop upgrades, custom cabinetry packages, and similar cosmetic luxury add-ons depreciate faster than their MSRP contribution suggests. The wholesale market values function and floorplan utility more durably than cosmetic appointments. A $3,000 premium interior package at MSRP often contributes under $500 to wholesale value by year three.

These patterns produce a practical acquisition framework. When evaluating a used RV for trade-in or wholesale purchase, certain specifications should trigger upward adjustment from guide value:
